Dear Parents,
Kindly note that the boys have completed 2 sets of past year papers. Kindly sign and remind your child to put both sets in his EL file.
Most of the boys are very weak in Editing (Section F) and Comprehension Open-Ended (Section H). Kindly remind your child to revise all the words in the Spelling lists given in Term 1 and Term 2 (up to Unit 6).
Here are some tips for answering the questions in Comprehension OE:
1. Take note of the question word and the kind of answer it requires.
eg. When did the alarm clock ring? (time + preposition)
It rang at quarter past seven.
*The preposition 'at' is necessary to answer a 'When' question. Omitting 'at' is committing a major grammatical error and 1 mark will be deducted.
2. Try to use as many words as possible in the text to form an answer for a question. However, care must be exercised so that the words chosen are appropriate. Certain words may need to be edited; for eg, changing the tense from present to past.
3. For a question which requires the boys to pick out a certain word or phrase from the text, they are to write the word/phrase in the box provided. There is NO need for them to write the answer as:
i. The word is '_____'.
ii. The phrase is '_____'.
4. Support an answer for an inferential question with evidence from the text.
eg. Why did Samy feel foolish?
He thought it was morning. (incomplete answer)
He went to school thinking that it was morning.
5. End every sentence with a full-stop.
6. Check the spelling, punctuation and tenses for every sentence.
Kindly note that the I-Comprehend booklet will be returned to the boys latest by the end of the week.
Thank you for your attention and patience!
